The Texan city of Brady, with a population of about 5,600, lies in McCulloch County and prides itself on being ‘The Heart of Texas’. It was also the home of G.Rollie White Racetrack, the brainchild of the banker, sportsman and philanthropist G.Rollie White who died in February 2006. The inaugural races at the track, a tight 3 furlong track on Richards Park complete with grandstand acquired from Arlington Downs track, were held in 1926 as part of the annual Jubilee celebration. That track was destroyed in June 1945 by a tornado, but returned in 1948 on a 4 furlong oval track on land to the south-west of the original site, occupying land donated by banker G Rollie White. The track was best known for quarter horse racing and was well supported from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s before closing. However, it reopened as G Rollie White Downs on 6th October 1989, welcoming a crowd in excess of 10,000, but the revival was short-lived, the track closing in December 1989. The 5 furlong oval track benefitted from an additional 4 furlong chute, although its open air grandstand was basic, but could seat 3000.
